Pozna? Climate Change Conference Overview

July 31st, 2010 Comments off

An overview of the Climate Change Conference (also known as COP 14), held in Pozna?, Poland, at the beginning of December, 2008. As with past conferences, this too was not without its controversies. For example, while the Adaptation Fund was launched the funding of it caused lots of disagreements. The conference came at a time when Europe seemed to weaken their usually strong stance on climate change action and on news that in recent years, emissions from industrialized nations had risen.Nokia

Protecting the environment by giving it an economic value?

July 31st, 2010 Comments off

For years, many have argued that our current economic system does not fully capture the cost of the environment. The price signal, for example, should be an indicator of resource scarcity or other environmental concerns, but often does not capture the full costs. (Current climate change is perhaps a clear indication of this.)

As a result, we continue efficiently producing products and services that have a negative impact on the environment in some way (which is inefficient, on the whole, in the long run).

For those who fear excessive government regulation, a truer accounting of such costs could allow markets to more naturally price goods and services, and highlight seemingly efficient companies and industries as inefficient, forcing change through markets, rather than regulation, which market proponents always fear. (The irony may be that to see such a change in our economic systems may require political leadership by governments and citizens ? although that is how national and global market systems came into being in the first place.)

The biodiversity page has been updated to explain this further.

Stanley Fink: The UK Economy Will Never Again Reach 3-4% Annual Growth Because People Live Too Long

July 30th, 2010 Comments off

Hedge fund icon Stanley Fink visited an a prep school recently to discusss his views of the economic climate in the UK.
From MenMedia:
The UK economy will recover, but “only after four or five years of austerity” and never to the three to four per cent annual growth rates it achieved in the past, hedge fund guru Stanley Fink told an audience at Manchester Grammar School.
“I do not think we will ever sustain those exceptional levels of economic growth again because of greater life expectancy, the need to care for the elderly, the diminution of the earth’s natural resources and the lack of cheap energy.”
He said Britain should look to develop new jobs in sectors such as engineering and hi-tech manufacturing, while also continuing to back the financial services sector.Join the conversation about this story »

Climate Change Introduction

July 30th, 2010 Comments off

Ocean acidification is a potentially large problem directly related to climate change resulting from ocean waters reacting with more carbon dioxide. Amongst other things, it seems to negatively affect certain plankton that help in absorbing carbon dioxide. Some of the affected sea creatures are also crucial to the food chain, so the implications could be big. Some further information, including a couple of short videos, have been added to explain this.Ims Health

Bulls Make Big Comeback On Final Day Of The Month: Here’s What You Need To Know (SPY)

July 30th, 2010 Comments off

It was an oddly news-filled, but quiet session in the market today. In the end, despite having been down most of the day, stocks ended up.
But first, the scoreboard:
Dow: +2.42NASDAQ: +3S&P 500: +0.68
And now, the top stories:

World markets were mostly subdued overnight, perhaps in part due to a weak industrial production number out of Japan, and also because of carryover from yesterday’s emotional day in the US.

James Bullard’s ‘we are Japan’ paper continued to garner a lot of talk this morning, culminating with 2 hours on CNBC this morning, where he expressed displeasure with the prospect of ending the Bush tax cuts.

The big action in the US started at 8:30. GDP came in on the weak side of what was expected — not horrible, but stocks sold off instantly on the news. On the other hand, Chicago PMI and University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment both came in better than expected.

But the market action was decidedly down beat (though again, not wildly so) for most of the day. In addition to equities, notable winners (and this should obviously concern the bulls) were Treasuries and the yen.
